£50 Church Fee for Your Wedding?

Father Michael Canny, P.P. of St. Eugene’s in Derry, Northern Ireland has started to charge wedding couples a flat fee of £50 to get married.

Of his 76 weddings last year only 16 were from local couples.

Father Canny says that most couples either don’t make a ‘donation’ or if they do, it is often very small. He also explained that many couples book up several churches 2-3 years in advance and make a final choice nearer the time, therefore taking dates away from other couples – he hoped this charge would help to prevent that.

£50 seems like a very small amount to me for ‘hiring’ Gods house for your wedding. I can’t imagine getting married in a church and not making a donation significantly more than that!

How much will you be ‘charged’, or will you ‘donate’ to your church when you get married? Is the Father being canny… or should the Church be free?

You can’t moan at £50 when some venue’s charge up to £400 just to get married .
