Pork Pie Replaces Wedding Cake

Newlyweds Simon and Rachael Tindall opted out of the traditional fruit and sponge wedding cake and chose instead a giant pork pie to cut and serve to guests at their rugby themed wedding.

Rugby fanatic Simon plays for Rockcliff Rugby Club and because the couple first met at a rugby club four years ago and all of his teammates were to be at the wedding, the couple decided to give their wedding a rugby theme.

Bride Rachael said: “The pork pie cake proved really popular – there was none left by the end of the wedding.

“I don’t know how we decided on it. I think it was Simon and his dad that came up with the idea. It started as a bit of a joke and then we thought, why not?

“We hadn’t seen one before and we’ll probably not see one again. Also, all the rugby players at the wedding – and there were quite a few there – love them. In fact, I think they thought the cake was the highlight of the wedding. I think our guests were quite amused when they saw it but we cut it up and used it in the evening buffet as well, so it got double use.

Simon added: “Most of the people said afterwards it was the best wedding they had been to”.

The giant pork pie was handmade by Simon’s dad who is a butcher and well known for his delicious pies as well as baking a huge batch every Boxing Day for the rugby team’s snacks after their annual Christmas match.

While spending their honeymoon in Australia Simon was restricted to watching only one match and that was mainly because it was the Rugby League World Cup Final.

“Simon does drive me mad with rugby sometimes,” said Rachael. “But I didn’t mind incorporating it into the wedding because it’s how we met and it made the day a bit different.

Can imagine the size of the mustard bowl needed!
