From the practicalities of budgets and venue-booking to the emotional curveballs you’ll be thrown along the way – whether cold feet or mutineering bridesmaids – it will help you pull off your perfect wedding without losing your mind.
Packed with ideas for making your big day both unique and memorable The Rough Guide to Weddings also features credit-crunch-busting tips that could save you hundreds of pounds, no-nonsense advice on etiquette and real-life anecdotes from brides and grooms on the highs and lows of wedding planning, disasters to avoid and top tips to steal. The Rough Guide to Weddings is the ultimate guide to getting hitched.
Well they would say that wouldn’t they!
I thought I had better grab myself a copy and put the claims to the test – not by getting married again, I don’t think the current Wife would approve, but by seeing how the advice stacks up against our own site. It’s not exactly a fair test, as they state themselves, this is a book – and a book can’t have dynamic content and vibrant forums for social interaction – on the other hand it is dangerous to soak in the bath with your laptop!
At 238 pages long you would be right to expect a lot of advice covering all aspects of planning and exercising your wedding – it does not disappoint.
It makes for an easy read, tinged with humour and serious warnings to ensure you don’t make any major mistakes in your planning. The book progresses through in the normal manner, money, roles, guest lists and so on through to the party at the end. It also steps back to take closer looks at the key areas such as flowers, food, photos etc
When the Bath Goes Cold
The book has a liberal sprinkling of links to websites that offer extended information or inspirational ideas so you can always fire up the laptop once the water has gone cold in your bath.
It has been written to appeal to both the US and UK markets and there are many cross references to the way it happens on the other side of the pond, you may find this an interesting aside – but it can easily be skipped if not.
The only real criticism of the book is that I was unable to find a single reference to WeddingChaos – how very dare they!
Seriously, if you like a book that you can hold in your hand and is made from paper then this is a great choice and one I can highly recommend.

Sentelle Soy Candles (Review)
Some of you will be thinking of using candles at your wedding, maybe during your ceremony, as table decorations at your reception or giving to your guests as favours.
With this in mind I was asked to try one of the candles from Sentelle Soy Candles the candle I enjoyed was from the Tureen Jar range with the heavenly scent of Southern Charm.
This range of candles come in a lovely ornate jars and have a double wick so you can enjoy the wonderful scent twice as much.
The other fragrances in this range are :
- Angel Type
- Amber Musk
- Butt Naked
Scent descriptions can be found on the website.
It also seems soy candles have a lot of benefits over paraffin candles these are (as listed on the website)
- They are clean-burning and do not produce soot that stains walls and harms lungs
- They are toxin-free and non-carcinogenic
- Our soy candles have very good fragrance absorption, and both the candles and room smells great
- The zero fragrance loss throughout the life of the candle means the candle smells as great at the bottom as it did at the top of the candle
- They are eco-friendly: Made from a sustainable resource & biodegradable
- They last 50% longer than conventional candles
- They are sourced from high quality soya beans
After testing these candles I must say I would highly recommend them not only are they lovely looking, have a wonderful scent but are very eco-friendly.
A complete must for any “Green” Bride to be.
Also note that postage and packaging is free for orders over £50 and brides are welcome to join the Members club for an annual membership fee of £120 to get a 40% discount on products.
Update : Sentelle have just contacted us to say that they are offering a discount of 25% when you buy at least 18 candles, to get the discount use code is WB010.
Take a look at the website for more great candles which come in a wide selection of colours and fragrances
You will be spolit for choice

Green Guide for Weddings – Book Review
Is having a ‘Green’ wedding important to you?
If you are one of the growing number of people who want to preserve and protect our environment, then having a green wedding is a must.
I have just finished reading the ‘Green Guide for Weddings’ by Jen Marsden and thought I would tell you a little about the book…
Before I start I should point out that Katherine is listed in the Acknowledgements and Wedding Chaos is quoted numerous times throughout the book – but I can assure you that by contributing towards the book we are in no way bias
The book is over 200 pages long and covers all aspects of getting married, the main sections are :
- Planning your Wedding
- The Wedding Budget
- The Wedding Planners
- The Venue
- The Transport
- On The Day
- The Attire
- The Jewels
- The Beautification
- The Catering
- The Dreamy Details
- Post Wedding
- The Gift List
- The Honeymoon
- The Green Directory
- Suppliers and Businesses who focus on being Green.
Each section take a look at the issues and offers practical advice and suggestions on how to be as green as possible. There is a wealth of information that is not only useful, but also interesting to read.
The book is littered with tips and ideas from professionals working within the wedding industry and the book concludes by listing loads of green companies who can help make you wedding a green one.
I found this book to be both an interesting and informative read – and I’m not even planning a wedding – so if you are in the planning stages, and you do want to be green, I can’t think of a better source of information.
